G2 Erika emerged from an early sketch for a semi condensed monospace typeface. It started out referencing historic typewriter lettering, but quickly moved on to something new. Early versions of G2 Erika were used for a number of personal projects (e.g. the gruppo-due.com system font). Through this extended use and testing phase we gradually polished, adapted and expanded G2 Erika to arrive at a sturdy typeface ready for heavy work.
Following our interest in expanding the single cut to a font family, we added a proportional version to the original monospace. By working on both styles at once, they started to influence each other’s characteristics. The pair now combines the technical and logical appearance its origins as a typewriter monospace with the details and rhythm of a proportional sans serif.
Inspired by an early use of G2 Erika for a publication featuring the logical language LINCOS invented by the mathematician Hans Freudenthal we added a wider range of mathematical symbols and a set of astronomical signs related to interstellar communication.
